Parent Information
School Hours
Students attend school from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
School Attendance
Your child's regular and prompt attendance at school is crucial to his/her success. Most kindergarten learning activities are group oriented and involve interaction with classmates. Please view school as a priority, and make sure your child attends every day except in cases of illness or emergency.
Absences
Whenever your child is absent, you must send a note explaining the absence when your child returns to school.
Flash Folder
Your child will receive a purple folder that will be called his/her "Flash Folder." In this folder, your child will keep their behavior report, Kindergarten words and other important information. Please make sure that your child brings it to school each day. Check this folder every day after school and remove all the papers that have been checked. Please also be sure to sign all papers requiring your signature and return all homework the day it is due.
Changes in Transportation
If you plan to pick up a child who normally rides the bus or you wish for your child to ride a different bus than usual, you must send a written note to school. Please do not rely on your child to give me the message.
If I do not receive a written note, then I must send your child home by his/her usual mode of transportation.
Outdoor Recess
The children will be going out for recess every day unless it is raining or extremely cold. Please keep this in mind when helping your child select clothes for the day.
Lunch
Our lunch time is from 11:30 to 12:00. Your child may buy lunch at school, or bring one from home. Menus will be sent home every month. A child who bring a lunch from home may buy milk at school. Each child will be assigned an ID number to be used in the cafeteria to keep track of his/her account.
Breakfast
Kindergartners will begin the school day eating breakfast in the cafeteria.
Money
On occasion, it will be necessary for your kindergartner to bring money to school. Always send the money in a sealed envelope in the Flash Folder. Make sure the envelope has the following information on it:
~ Your child's first and last name
~ The amount of money
~ The purpose for the money (lunch, book orders, field trip...etc)
~ Teacher's name
Book Orders
Scholastic Book Order forms will be sent home with your child once a month. This is a chance for you to buy quality books for your child at low prices. Plus, as an added bonus, our class earns credit for each dollar we spend which will go toward more books in our room. If you would like to order, simply complete the form, send a check made out to Scholastic Book Club, and return it to school in an envelope. Please do not feel as if you must buy every month.
Birthdays
Birthdays are special occasions for young children. If you wish, your child may bring treats for the class on his/her birthday. Cookies and brownies seem to work best. You may also send juice boxes as well. Make sure you bring plates and napkins, too. Please send a note two or three days in advance so that I can give you an exact number of students and set a time for the class to celebrate. We celebrate summer birthdays at the end of the school year. Party invitations can only be passed out at school if everyone in the class gets an invitation.
Report Cards
Students will receive Report Cards four times during the school year....after every 9 weeks. The Report Card will evaluate how your child is progressing academically, socially, and physically. Please look over the Report Card, sign it, and return it to school. If you have any questions, please send a note or call me at school (538-4120). I will get back with you as soon as possible.
Parent/Teacher Relationship
Throughout the school year, I will communicate with you through notes, telephone calls, monthly calendars, progress reports, Report Cards and parent-teacher conferences. You may also e-mail me at [email protected] I am available for conferences from 8:00 to 8:30 most mornings. If you would like to schedule a conference, call the school at 538-4120 to get an appointment time. I encourage you to contact me if you have any questions or concerns.
Parent Volunteers
During the school year, we will have a variety of special classroom activities. Please support them by sending supplies or treats. The Room Mother will be contacting you about room parties and other events.
Volunteers
Your involvement in our room, and at our school, not only helps me, but it also boosts your child's self esteem and confidence! Volunteer times in my classroom vary depending on the needs of the class. Volunteering involves preparing projects, cutting items out, sorting, filing, working with children on projects, and helping the children review skills taught in class. If you are interested in being a volunteer, please consider the following areas.
Room Parent/Room Party Helpers
This volunteer works very closely with me to plan events in our classroom.
They also co-chair all room parties, handle Wrap-A-Rama, and count our Banks receipts and Box Tops. This volunteer also helps with the 3 major parties we have during the school year. Please ask if you help this volunteer out in anyway (coming to the party, giving supplies, helping with games, etc.)
Mr. or Mrs. Science
This volunteer will change weekly depending on which child is performing the experiment. He/she will be given the opportunity to perform an experiment for the class with his/her parent or by himself/herself. The child gets to pick the lesson.
AND they get to pick the time--we work around you!
Celebrity Readers
This person comes to our classroom to share a book. He/She reads any book(s) of their choice to the class. The students discuss the story and sometimes make a craft to go along with the story. We have Celebrity Readers any day after lunch.
Kinder-cooking
What's cooking in Mrs. Braboy's Room?
Cooking in the classroom is not only fun, but a valuable learning experience for kindergartners. Most of these recipes can be found in Look'n Cook from Mailbox Magazine or on our classroom website. Just click on "Recipes." Our parent and grandparent volunteers provide the ingredients and assist the kindergartners on Friday afternoons from 3:00-3:25.
Thanks so much! I appreciate all of my parents who are able to devote their time and energy to our classroom. If you are unable to volunteer for one of our major needs, maybe you can come in later in the year and tell us about your career.
**I don't allow parents to volunteer in the classroom during the first few weeks of school. This gives me time to get the children settled into our routine.
Exciting Year
Kindergarten is such an exciting time! We are learning about the magic of books, letters, numbers, poetry, singing, science, social studies, art, music, gym class, computers, Sign Language, Spanish, and oh, yes....school rules! Enjoy this year and let your kindergartner know how important school is to you.
I am looking forward to a great year with your kindergartner!
